A combination of two
essential words, education and entertainment forms ‘Edutainment’. It is a media
that is designed to ‘educate’ through ‘entertainment’. Most often, edutainment
includes content intended to teach but has incidental entertainment value.
Educational games for
kids fulfill several educational
purposes. Some learning educational games for kids may be explicitly designed with education in mind, while others may have an incidental or
secondary educational value. All types of educational games for children, including board, card, and video games, may be used in a learning environment. Kids’ educational games are designed to teach children about certain subjects, expand concepts, understand a historical event, reinforce development, or culture, or assist them in learning a skill as they play.
According to a survey held in
2010, at least 68% of American children are educated through kids’ learning games, and as per the questions asked to those children in it, they enjoy the process of game-based learning and felt it entertaining. There are 3 reasons why children's educational games are a better
alternative to traditional education.
The first reason is the
proven fact of an ongoing research that has included the last 20 years of
educational findings that digital games can be educational; second is that the
generation of today wants ‘multiple streams of information’, wherein quick and
frequent interaction is included that allows inductive reasoning; third is that
the mere popularity of children’s educational games have created a deep and positive impact on children’s learning methodology. The idea of educational games for children is that they get involved in an educational activity by choice and not by force. Learning through kids’ educational games does not mean that the children are
engaging in those only for leisure, but they have also included the desire to
make them learn a skill, be a team player, and spend time in a chosen
educational activity.
Educational games for kids are perhaps the earliest “edutainment” objects that a kid encounters, as many games have educational aspects over the aesthetic appeal. These kids' educational games can teach them literacy, numerical, conceptual, or motor skills. Some learning educational games for kids are of considerable appeal and benefit to
both children and adults, such as Lego or Rubik’s Cube, as their design and
implementation can range from the simple to the sophisticated. And so, the
process of education is accomplished entertainingly.
Thus, it can be concluded that the main purpose of ‘edutainment’ is to promote student learning through usage of entertainment, which has become more accessible and easier to incorporate into the educational process. In the results of the pilot project of implementing kids’ educational toys as edutainment at the classroom, education is presented.
